RAISING RHINO RANDS
An incredible charity started by Leila’s Muay Thai sparring partner, Tania Oosthuizen, who heard about baby rhinos becoming orphans after their mothers were killed for their horns. Tania organised unemployed women in local communities to make gorgeous stuffed rhinos fashioned out of fabric to sell and raise funds for the rhinos.
Supporting Rhino Orphanages and Veterinary Organisations in South Africa to cover food bills, vet bills, and the general day to day costs of rescuing, helping, protecting and rehabilitating these precious, incredible orphans, Raising Rhino Rands not only helps rhinos, but the women making them too.
If you would like to give rhinos as a responsible, significant and impactful corporate gift, please mail Leila@goldensturgeon.com
OUR WORK IN SOUTH AFRICA HAS BROUGHT US CLOSE TO THESE WONDERFUL ORGANISATIONS
The Indlovu project provides a crèche and foundation schooling in one of the most impoverished areas around Cape Town. Based in Khayalitsha, the Project has felt the financial and physical support of our clients and us, through donations of money and items from shoots which may be more useful to the school. Furniture, outdoor garden play things, books, nappies and a lot more have been donated. Our work still continues with them from Belgium.
Based in Guguletu, Cape Town, Alathas is a grassroots crèche started by Nocawe Nompunga who saw a desperate need in her community, and approached Leila for funding: Creches are very necessary for woman to be able to work and become economically self empowered. After starting her crèche up, The Golden Sturgeon committed to continue funding basics like food, electricity, water and supplies from every shoot we did, and got our clients involved as well. Die Huis, for example, shot with our assistance in Cape Town over 3 three years, and contributed to the Alathas Crèche. Producer Kristof D’haene even came to Cape Town with a suitcase full of items for the kids. We bought much needed mattresses and blankets for the kids to sleep on, a first aid kits, nappies, food, electricity, crayons, paper and more.
SIGNS & WONDERS SOUP KITCHEN
Working amongst the indigent in Napier, a rural village two hours out of Cape Town, Paul Harris our local producer in Cape Town, came across a couple of people who wanted to cook for the local children. The Golden Sturgeon donated money to start a soup kitchen with basic pots, pans and vegetables needed. Run by Anna, Lena and Johanna, sisters who selflessly give their time and effort, to feed the poorest of the poor children of Napier. After starting, they have been able to register the charity with the municipality and get some Government assistance. We are currently assisting with the repair of their roof.
Since the start of the soup kitchen in 2017 hundreds of bowls of soup get served a week, and more people from the village have jumped in to help.
